"UK Detention Centres: a discussion of feminist activism" - Cathryn Ladd
Friday January 30th, 2015 - 4.15pm, The Fothergill Theatre
This discussion will look at the operation of UK Detention Centres, in particular Yarl’s Wood Women’s Centre in Bedfordshire. We will consider the role of the centre, the abuse of power of the UK Home Office and the stories of the women behind bars. We will explore how gender, sexuality, race and class contribute to both treatment of subjects and their immigration applications. This will be an interactive, role-playing talk that will challenge students to think beyond their own position and consider the ways they can involve themselves in feminist activist projects.
Old Scholar Cathryn Ladd, is currently engaged in an MRes in Gender, Sexuality and the Law at The School of Oriental and African Studies, London. Her research interests lie in Feminist Legal Theory, Critical Race Theory, and how to use visual art and performance as a tool of legal analysis in both International and Criminal Law. She has written on immigration in relation to female LGBTQ subjects and has engaged with and considered the feminist practice of the NGO ‘Movement for Justice’.
