"The NHS and the Business of Healthcare" - David J. O'Regan
The NHS is an institution of which we can all be proud. It is, however, under strain and not without its problems. We are familiar with Bristol and Mid Staffordshire – what are the lessons? There will be a funding gap of £20 billion by 2020. There is an increasing demand. We have a changing population. How are we going to meet that demand and the challenge to be ‘Better, Safer and Simpler’? If we have a limited resource, how do we prioritise? Modern health care has to be safe, effective and offer a good experience - how do we know and are we getting value? There are current health epidemics – obesity, alcohol smoking and antibiotic resistance for example. How do we change people’s behaviours? How do we get people to take more responsibility for health? What are the solutions? Where can we look and what does the future hold? The future is here today with technology, genetics and stem cell research? Does this present society with ethical dilemmas – we can but should we? Who decides? Or is it ‘more simple’ – it is what matters to you!
David J. O'Regan attained a Bachelor's and a Doctorate in Medicine, an MBA (submitting a final thesis that provided new models for healthcare) and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. Professionally, he is currently the practising Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals University Trust, a post he has held since February 2001. Among his other management duties, he is the Clinical Director of Cardiac Services, Lead Clinician of the SMART Care Program and the Lead Clinician for the National Primary Care Development Team, furthering clinical leadership and managing change.
